Our History
How it started
Blackrush started because we're tired of following other peoples rules. We're tired of the box society tries to put everyone in. The countless times over the course of our lives getting the shaft! So the idea of breaking away, building something real, and meaningful began.
We knew from the beginning we would try to be different in every aspect. Everything we do is intentional. We're just two native Floridians building something of our own with how we see fit.
Everything here is self taught. The art, the design, the website, the product, and plenty of mistakes along the way. We learned by doing, and the work keeps evolving because we do.
How we got our name
When we set out to build this brand, we knew one thing for certain. We didn't want to be just another salt something. No offense to the brands that lead with salt, but it's been done, and if you're going to represent Florida's outdoors, you've got to bring something different.
We wanted a name with roots. Something you'd remember, not because it shouted, but because it carried a story. So instead of reaching for the obvious, we went looking through Florida itself. The native plants, the wildlife, the actual makeup of this place, hunting for something real that still had a ring to it.
That's how we found blackrush.
Blackrush is a real Florida plant. Black needlerush, if you want the full name. It's a tough native rush that grows thick across the salt marshes up and down the coast, so dark it reads black from a distance, and sharp enough to earn the "needle" in its name. It's one of the most common plants in Florida's marshes, and quietly one of the most important. It holds the shoreline together, filters the water, and gives cover to more birds and wildlife than most people will ever notice. It doesn't get talked about. It just does the work.
The more we learned about it, the more it fit. Native to this place and not boxed into one slice of it. Everywhere from the flats to the backwater, holding everything together without asking for credit. Not flashy, not loud, but sharp when it needs to be and near impossible to move once it takes root.
We didn't want a name we made up. We wanted one Florida already had. And finding it the way we did, digging through the real biology of this state instead of grabbing the first salt and sea cliché, is about as us as it gets. Intentional right down to the name.
The botany is accurate, so you can stand behind it: "blackrush" is a genuine common name for black needlerush, a salt-loving rush with grayish-green to blackish hues and very sharp pointed tips that covers large areas of Florida's coastal salt and brackish marshes, and its dense stands form deep root systems that protect the shoreline, filter suspended solids, and support more than 60 bird species at least seasonally. ufl USDA Plants Database
What we're about
Blackrush is art driven first. Not a trend machine. Not a content engine. Not a hype cycle. We make what we want to make, with intention, restraint, and honesty. If it resonates with you, that's great. If it doesn't, that's fine too. We're not trying to be for everyone.
The work is inspired by the things we care about and spend time around. Fishing, hunting, the water, the woods, the beaches, wildlife, military culture, discipline, and the quiet moments in between. Those things are part of our world, not the limits of it.
